GPON Fiber Optic: Definition, Functions and How It Works

GPON Fiber Optic - Currently, the development of communication technology continues to progress very rapidly and is different from the past which still uses additional media in the form of copper. Over time, the process of sending communication data such as the internet has switched to using GPON fiber optic technology.

GPON Definition

GPON or the abbreviation of the sentence Gigabit Capable Passive Optical Network is a high-speed communication network technology that functions to access various communication services such as the internet, VOIP, video calls, IP TV, and others.

GPON Fiber Optic: Definition, Functions and How It Works

GPON is also known as Passive Optical LAN which has internet range and speed exceeding Gigabit Ethernet in a LAN network or local area network. This telecommunications technology can save electricity usage costs because it is a passive device located at a wide network point. In addition, GPON’s performance and security are better than LAN networks.

GPON Function

GPON has the main function of managing and providing services related to multimedia such as video, data, images, voice, and various other visual content. This GPON technology can be used on a residential or business scale.

How GPONs Work

GPON has a working principle which is initially in the form of an electrical signal at the transmitter and then converted into light waves by an electro-optic transducer (Diode Laser), then sent to a receiver at the other end of the device via a fiber-optic cable connection. At the signal receiver or receiver, the electrical signal will be converted by a diode or optoelectronic transducer into the form of an electrical signal again.

Fiber to the Home

Fiber to the home abbreviated as FFTH is an internet network that uses Fiber Optic cables, this FFTH connects service centers with users or CPE (Customer Premises Equipment).

Advantages of using Fiber Optic:

1. Capable of transmitting data up to 100 Mbps speed.

2. Can be used to serve video and voice data connections (Triple Play).

3. Can distribute information in two different directions (Transmit and Receive).

4. Using one core fiber or splitter technology that can be used to distribute to many users to make it more efficient.

Hardware Components in Fiber Optic Networks:

1. Media converter

2. Switches

3. ONUs (optical network units)

4. SFP (small form factor pluggable)

5. OLT (optical line terminal)

Conclusion

In conclusion, this is a short discussion that I can share about fiber optic GPON, starting from the understanding, of GPON functions and how it works. I hope all of the above explanations were useful and you can understand them well. That’s all and thank you, see you in the next article.
